Overview

Amoxycillin is a penicillin antibiotic. It fights bacteria in your body. It is used to treat many different types of infections caused by bacteria, such as ear infections, bladder infections, pneumonia, gonorrhea, and E. coli or salmonella infection.These antibiotic do not kill bacteria, but they stop bacteria from multiplying by preventing bacteria from forming the walls that surround them. It has been demonstrated by recent studies that Amoxycillin shows significantly better symptoms relief with the modest improvement of Pneumonia and other throat infections.

Indications and Usage

Amoxicillin is used in the treatment of a number of infections including:

• Skin infections.
• Urinary tract infections.
• Lyme disease.
• Chlamydia infections.
• Pneumonia and throat infections.

Contraindications

Amoxicillin is contraindicated for use in the following conditions:

Infectious mononucleosis.

lymphatic leukemia (increased risk of side effects).

Patients with hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.

Amoxicillin should not be prescribed for patients with severe diarrhea or vomiting because of poor absorbtion.

Pharmacology

Mechanism of Action

As we know that Amoxicillin belongs to a class of antibiotics called penicillins. Other members of this class include ampicillin, piperacillin ticarcillin and several others. These antibiotics all have a similar mechanism of action. They do not kill bacteria, but they stop bacteria from multiplying by preventing bacteria from forming the walls that surround them. The walls are necessary to protect bacteria from their environment and to keep the contents of the bacterial cell together. Bacteria cannot survive without a cell wall. Amoxicillin is effective against many different bacteria including H. influenzae, N. gonorrhoea, E. coli, Pneumococci, Streptococci, and certain strains of Staphylococci.
