Pharmacology
Mechanism of Action
Diacerein is an antirheumatic drug. It produces its action by inhibiting Interleukin-1. It is a disease modifying anti-rheumatoid drug used in the treatment of Osteoarthritis and chronic inflammatory arthritis. Diacerein is a slow-acting, symptom-modifying and disease-structure modifying drug for osteoarthritis. In arthritis the cartilage that protects the ends of the bones breaks down and causes pain and swelling. Diacerein may slow down the breakdown of cartilage and relieve pain and swelling.
Pharmacokinetics
Diacerein is an anthraquinone derivative that has been used in osteoarthritis. It is thought to act via inhibition of interleukin-1Β.
Interactions
Decreased absorption with aluminium and/or magnesium hydroxide antacids. Increased risk of diarrhoea with laxatives, antibiotics. Avoid co-admin with fibres and phytates.
